Roaster Collaboration #88 - Phoebe Rose Coffee Roaster

Phoebe Rose Coffee Roasters join you again in your kitchen this month, having last been with us in 2023. They have evolved from their accidental entry to the coffee scene and now have a range of blends and single origins, including the award winning Bens Blend that we sampled last time.

 

When last we saw the team at Phoebe Rose they were still creating their cafe, but that work is now well completed and have been accepting customers in store for some time now. If you're passing through Hamilton be sure to stop in and check them out.

At the heart of their craft is the roaster, and Phoebe Rose continue to roast beans with utmost care and precision using the same 10kg Toper drum roaster.

This month we have the pleasure of sampling Hauora Blend, which was crafted with care for the resilient hearts of Aotearoa's rural community. Originally made for 2024 Fieldays, its rich, invigorating flavour became so beloved that customers clamoured for more. Named by a dedicated exhibitor from Hauora Taiwhenua. "Hauora" embodies the essence of well-being and vitality, honoring those who tirelessly strive to maintain good health in our rural heartlands. Enjoy a cup of Hauora, a tribute to strength, health, and the vibrant essence of our community.

With bean origins of Brazil, Tanzania, Mexico, and Ethiopia you can expect to taste Earthy notes and nuttiness with a smooth sweet floral note.

Espresso Recipe: 1:2 coffee-to-espresso ratio with a 25-30 second extraction.

Plunger Recipe: Use a 1:12 coffee-to-water ratio. 

  1. Measure: Add 30g of coffee to your plunger.
  2. Bloom: Pour 40ml of hot water (90-95°C) over the grounds, stir gently, and let it bloom for 30 seconds.
  3. Brew: Add the remaining 310ml of water and let it steep for 4 minutes.
  4. Plunge & Enjoy: Slowly press the plunger down and serve immediately.

Cold Brew Coffee Ratio:

  • Strong Brew (1:8): 125 grams of coffee to 1 liter of water.
  • Milder Brew (1:10): 100 grams of coffee to 1 liter of water.

Mix coffee and water in a jar, refrigerate for 12-24 hours, strain, and serve over ice. Enjoy!
