Dark Horse Coffee Co. began in 2016, nestled in the industrial zone of Paraparaumu on the Kapiti Coast. It started as the pursuit for a rich, dark roast by bean wrangler Matthew Payne who, after 25 years in the industry decided it was time to take the reins in creating a blend of coffee that really packs a punch.
Although the team at Darkhorse are both artists and perfectionists at what they do, they don't take themselves too seriously and are known for having a sense of humour and keeping the vibe fun.
Over the last few years, they have been helping to build a craft community on the Kapiti coast, their roastery is neighbouring local producers Tuatara and Duncan's Breweries, who have all collaborated on a number of occasions to create some interesting coffee/beer concoctions. The takeaway window they run within the roastery has become a hub for local workers, with pinball, arcade games, and funky tunes always pumping.
Recently, they have taken on a larger warehouse space and Loring hot air drum roaster, which reduces their emissions by as much as 80% compared to other roasters, whilst providing a much cleaner tasting coffee. Moving their roasting to the Loring is a big step towards their goal of sustainability, which is an ongoing journey in our ever-changing environment.
Their main focus is flavour and consistency. This month we’re featuring their House Roast, Colt, which is a rich, full-bodied 5 bean blend with notes of dark chocolate and red Doris plum, with a smooth caramel finish. Perfect for espresso but brews beautifully through a plunger or filter too.
